Kayam technical details

The Kayam structure is a mature product which has gradually been expanded from the original 4 pole structure to the multi purpose expandable 18 pole unit now in use. As the facilities of non-linear finite element analysis for membranes were not available when the structure was originally built, there is a gradual but logical change from hand drawn calculations to the current FEA results. In general, the results are more than matched by the real world feedback from the in situ installations.

These calculations show various load conditions and factors, but are in all cases positive. The structure in all its forms and combinations has been used successfully at over 60 installations since 1992, and has withstood wind speeds in excess of 38 metres per second, (85 miles per hour, 137 kilometres per hour) in Cork, Republic of Ireland in 1996.

The calculations demonstrate that the computer model of the structure can withstand most environmental conditions.
